The Books of Ezra and Nehemiah in Hebrew Scripture are the key literary sources for the period of the Restoration in Jerusalem, the formation of the Jewish religious community after the Babylonian Captivity.

An initial group returned to Jerusalem with Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah (). The prophets Haggai and Zechariah also played important roles in encouraging the people of Judah and. The Book of Ezra is a book of the Hebrew Bible; which formerly included the Book of Nehemiah in a single book, commonly distinguished in scholarship as Ezra– two became separated with the first printed rabbinic bibles of the early 16th century, following late medieval Latin Christian tradition.

Composed in Hebrew and Aramaic, its subject is the Return to Zion following the close. The book of Ezra continues from where 2 Chronicles ends, with Cyrus, king of Persia, issuing a decree that permitted the Jews of his kingdom to return to Jerusalem after seventy years of captivity. God is universally sovereign and can use a polytheistic king of Persia to make possible His people’s release.

He used Artaxerxes, another Persian. Ezra, Hebrew ʿezraʾ, (flourished 4th century bc, Babylon and Jerusalem), religious leader of the Jews who returned from exile in Babylon, reformer who reconstituted the Jewish community on the basis of the Torah (Law, or the regulations of the first five books of the Old Testament).

His work helped make Judaism a religion in which law was central, enabling the Jews to survive as a community. Ezra is the writer of this book. He is one of the characters who has not received proper recognition. He was a descendant of Hilkiah, the high priest (Ezra ), who found a copy of the Law during the reign of Josiah (2 Chron.

Ezra, as a priest, was unable to serve during the Captivity. There was no temple. EZRA ESDRAS The second book of the prophet Ezra, the son of SaraiYah, the son of AzariYah, the son of HilkiYah, the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub, EZRA ESDRAS The son of AhiYah, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the son of AmariYah, the son of AzariYah, son of.

The books of Ezra and Nehemiah are the only completely historical books in the third section of the Hebrew Bible, the Ketuvim (Writings). In English Bibles, they are usually split into two, with the book of Nehemiah appearing as a separate book from Ezra, but in the Hebrew tradition, they are one book, entitled “Ezra,” and Nehemiah is simply the second part of Ezra.

Ezra chapter 2 KJV (King James Version) 1 Now these are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came again unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his city.

2 Which came with Zerubbabel: Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai. Index for Book of Ezra “Title”: Even though Ezra’s name does not enter the account of Judah’s post-Exilic return to Jerusalem untilthe book bears his name meaning (“Jehovah helps”), as a title.

This is because both Jewish and Christian tradition attribute authorship to this famous scribe-priest. New Testament writers do not quote the book of Ezra. The Book of Ezra. Ezra - Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and [put it] also in writing, saying, Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the.

Author: The Book of Ezra does not specifically name its author. The tradition is that the prophet Ezra wrote the Book of Ezra. It is interesting to note that once Ezra appears on the scene in chapter 7, the author of the Book of Ezra switches from writing in the third person to first person.

The history of this book is the accomplishment of Jeremiah's prophecy concerning the return of the Jews out of Babylon. From its contents we especially learn, that every good work will meet with opposition from enemies, and be hurt by the misconduct of friends; but that God will make his cause to prevail, notwithstanding all obstacles and adversaries.

The books of Ezra and Nehemiah were written during his reign. Ezra’s record begins with the first group that returned under Cyrus.

But Ezra himself be-came personally involved in the story during the 7th year of the reign of Araxerxes, when Ezra led a group of Jews back to Palestine ( BC). In the 21st year of the reign, Nehemiah led an. Ezra is a book of Narrative History and Genealogies. It was written by Ezra at approximately B.C.
